Tarnów Wineries & Enotourism

As depressing as the harsh reality of climate change can be, there’s always a silver lining somewhere, or you might say a burgundy one in this case. As the Polish climate has become increasingly mild with less frosts and shorter winters, the Polish wine industry has bloomed, with Małopolska emerging as Poland’s wine country. Tarnów, as it happens, is known as the ‘Polish hotspot‘ (‘Polski biegun ciepła’) not simply because that was the best catchphrase the suits on the tourist board could come up with, but also because Tarnów has the warmest average temperature in Poland, the country’s most sunny days, the longest summers and the least number of windy days. This is especially true of the Pogórze region just south of Tarnów, which possesses a microclimate ideal for the cultivation of grapes used for winemaking. Essentially the Polish Napa Valley, the region features some lovely countryside and enough vineyards offering tours and tastings to put together a nice ruddy road trip.

Wineries Near Tarnów

If you’re an oenophile (or even know what that word means) we really do recommend hiring a car and heading south from Tarnów to discover the scenic countryside and some of the best wines Poland has to offer. The region is also full of cycling trails if you’ve got the time and inclination. Below we list four of the best wineries in close proximity to Tarnów, but there are actually up to a dozen small wineries all within 35km of each other, and Tarnów, with many more across Małopolska. For more info about enotourism in southern Poland, including a handy map of all the wineries in the area, visit enotarnowskie.pl (Polish-only). You can pick up a physical map of Małopolska wineries in person at the Tarnów Tourist Information Office and participating vineyards.

Events:

For three years now, the Midsummer Night has been celebrated with “Wianki na Winnicy” – an event that pays tribute to the core of what the region is all about. The “Wianki na Winnicy” show embraces centuries-old history, natural cultivation and breeding with tradition of winemaking that dates back to the 15th c. on our lands. That constitutes a perfect foundation for development of wine tourism in Małopolska region.

Numerous workshops are organized at the Vineyard at the time including: wreath-weaving, gingerbread decorating, culinary, animation for children,  local food tasting and a live music. The “Noc Kupały” or “Noc Świętojańska” or “Sobótka” is an old Slavic custom of celebrating the shortest night of the year, also known as a feast of love, fertility, the Sun and the Moon. The tradition says the rituals were to ensure good harvest and health to the celebrating people. That magic night was believed to had been lit up with multiple fires and frolic activities, fortune telling and dissolute dances.

With elevation of 340 m. it allows magnificent overlook of the Biała River valley and the Beskid Sądecki and the Beskid Niski ranges. The Manru Vineyard lays on the land once owned by I.J. Paderewski. The area was once the sanctuary and a dream come true for the great composer and prime minister of Poland, who dreamed of an idyllic life. The name is derived from a helmet that the owners live in. In Polish, the word “nowizny” refers to something new that has never been done before – a novelty. The vineyard is located in Połom Mały village, close to a better known Iwkowa village, on a on southwest slope with 20% steepness. The vine grows in permeable soil with a loess-like layer that was brought there by the glacier. Unique microclimate of Pogórze is exceptionally friendly to grapevines. The plum orchards planted on the opposite side of the vineyard protect it from wind and rain. And the plums are the primary treasure of Iwkowa neighborhood. That’s where famous “susorka” and „suska sechlońska” prunes come from.

One of the unique features of the vinery is that wine tasting takes place in an old stone cellar, dating back to 1891.

The hosts invite organized groups of 10 and more to the commented tasting of plum dishes that include smalec (lard), naleśniki (pancakes), koreczki z boczkiem i śliwką (bacon-wrapped prunes), pasztet (pate) and a variety of plum-inspired cold cuts from a local butcher’s shop, prune kompot (fruit drink) and homemade bread. All served as a buffet.

Local product tasting, separately from wine tasting, is also available upon arrangement and includes: prune lard, pancakes with plum jam, seasonal pierogi, grill dishes and variety of cakes. We also have local cheeses from Laskowa on stock with paprika, herbs, smoked or white, as well as deer pates and sausages.

Located on the southeast slope of a hill in the buffer zone of Ciężkowice Landscape Park, some 250 m above sea level, the vineyard is protected from wind in the north by Kokocz Mountain (464 m). In the south and east it neighbors Ciężkowice Foothills and Brzanka Range, and Strzyżów-Dynów Foothills respectively. Kokocz Mountain effectively protects the vineyard also from the storms and heavy rains, hence the annual rainfall is relatively lower than in the neighborhood. Highly permeable soil – typical Carpathian flysch – gives the wine its unique floral bouquet that can be found in both smell and taste.

The vineyard is located in the southeast outskirts of Tuchów. The vines are planted on the south and southwest slope stretching between 220 and 320 m above sea level. From the north, the vineyard is protected by Lasy Tuchowskie – several-hundred-hectare large forest complex. Lack of industry and even big farms ensures silence and fresh air, making the whole site a real sanctuary for both grapes and wine-lovers. The vineyard is awarded eco-certificate and maintained with accordance to permaculture principles. There are no plantings other than the grapes on the site. No pesticides, herbicides nor other chemical agents are used. Historically, the area belonged to individual farmers who only used natural fertilizers hence the soil is healthy and alive. Located on the south slope of a hill with elevation of 285-308 m, in Janowice village. The vineyard is very well exposed to sunlight and faced towards Dunajec River. That’s an advantage as the river “takes away” cold air. In the north the vineyard is protected by dense beech forest and cold winds from the east and west are stopped by neighboring hills. Sandy loam soil accumulate moisture and retains water, securing the vines from damages during the heat.

From the north it is protected by a natural ridge whereas the east and west sides are sheltered by old, natural apple, plum and cherry orchards. The microclimate is also under influence of warm air flowing in from Tarnów, the town known as “Poland’s hotspot”. The soil there is of dusty-clay-rocky characteristic. The reddish rock is actually a sandstone with some iron and copper oxides, which have totally positive influence on the red wines’ taste. Soil there is acidic with a pH of 6.88. The vineyard took its name after historic Chrząstowski of Zadora coat of arms family vineyard, once located there. The Chrząstowskis owned Szczepanowice still in the mid-19th c.
