Culture.pl presents a series of snapshots from the history of Tarn\u00f3w, a city in southeastern Poland.<!--more--><\/span><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"content\">\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">A Galician city<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">At the beginning, there was a village, but following a royal decree, the Krak\u00f3w voivode of Spycimir (with the Leliwa coat of arms) made it a city. From then on, Tarn\u00f3w was a private city, held by the Tarnowski, Ostrogski, Zas\u0142awski and Sanguszko families \u2013 but it also belonged to emperors and kings. Its castle ruins, city hall, basilica and renaissance tenement houses are great reminders of its long history.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In time, Tarn\u00f3w amassed everything a Galician city needed: a railway station, art-deco architecture, Vienna-style caf\u00e9s and a statue of Adam Mickiewicz, which became the site of patriotic celebrations. In fact, Tarn\u00f3w was not just any ordinary city, because it was a metropolis for Galician standards \u2013 the third biggest settlement of the region, after Lw\u00f3w (today\u2019s Lviv) and Krak\u00f3w. But ascribing a metropolitan character to Tarn\u00f3w might be an overstatement, given that, as Karol Estreicher put it:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Galician cities have always been lethargic and languid, devoid of light and any desire for noble diversions. They have been and always will be so. The tiniest town of Congress Poland is much greater than Przemy\u015bl, Rzesz\u00f3w, Tarn\u00f3w, Jas\u0142o or S\u0105cz \u2013 cities covered under a cloud of ignorance.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Martin Pollack\u2019s Po Galicji (After Galicia) is written in a similar tone:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Karl Ludwig\u2019s railway went from Krak\u00f3w through Tarn\u00f3w, Przemy\u015bl, Lw\u00f3w and Tarnopol to the East, where it reached the Podwo\u0142oczyska customs station at the Russian border. [\u2026] After around 70 km, the train reached the county capital of Tarn\u00f3w. Located at the right bank of the Bia\u0142a river, it was the seat of a Roman Catholic bishop and a railway junction.
